Composting

10. august 2022.

Composting is a natural process of recycling organic waste, which produces valuable fertilizer. In this way, organic waste, with the help of oxygen and tiny organisms such as bacteria and fungi, is transformed into humus, which can be used as organic fertilizer.

The material for composting in home composters consists of:
- brown part - sawdust, leaves, cardboard, twigs, etc.
- green part - mowed grass, vegetable waste, fruit and coffee grounds...
- water - for the development of compost, it is important to have an optimal amount of water, so that your compost resembles a slightly wetted sponge.

Brown materials provide carbon for compost, green materials provide nitrogen, and water provides moisture to help break down organic matter.

A composter can be made from wood, braided wire, an old barrel or old tires. When making the composter, care should be taken to ensure that there are openings necessary for air circulation. In order for your compost to "breathe", you should not press down on the waste in the composter. Larger amounts of wet waste should be distributed throughout the composter and dry material should be added over them. Artificial fertilizers or other means to accelerate the biological process must not be added.

The composting process can last from one month to 10 months. The final product is mature compost - dark, nutritious soil with high concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which is used as fertilizer and has a pleasant smell.
